Southern Region – Summer Field Tour

Save the date for the Southern Region’s Summer Field Tour.  This year’s tour will focus on the 2017 Brian Head Fire and the subsequent restoration efforts.  Lunch will be provided and everyone is welcome.

Initial Meeting Location (near the mouth of Little Creek Canyon outside Paragonah: take Exit #82 off I-15, travel south for about 1 mile on Main St/271, turn east onto 700 N, travel east for about 1 mile to large parking area)

               9:00 a.m.    Introductions and General Tour Information – Nic Braithwaite (UDWR)

               9:05 a.m.    Overview of Brian Head Fire and Initial Response – Gary Bezzant (UDWR) and Brooke Shakespeare (USFS)

Stop 1 (near Horse Valley Rd and Red Creek Rd junction)

               9:45 a.m.    Timber Harvest – Brooke Shakespeare (USFS)

 Stop 2 (about 1.5 miles south of Stop 1 on Horse Valley Rd)

               10:15 a.m.  Aquatic and Riparian Restoration – Mike Golden (USFS), Meghan Krott (BLM), Teresa Griffin (UDWR)

               10:30 a.m.  Road Reroute – Brooke Shakespeare (USFS)

Stop 3 (UDWR cabin at 305 Anglers Loop)

               11:30 a.m.  Panguitch Lake Water Quality and Fisheries – Nic Braithwaite (UDWR)

               11:45 p.m. Catered Lunch – UDWR Panguitch Lake Cabin

Stop 4 (about 4.5 miles north of Highway 143 and Sidney Valley Rd junction)

               1:00 p.m.    Straw Mulch and Seeding – Gary Bezzant (UDWR) and Brooke Shakespeare (USFS)

Stop 5 (about 1 mile north of Highway 143 and Burts Rd junction in Brian Head)

               2:00 p.m.    Restoration using Aspen Seedlings – Dr. Karen Mock and, tentatively, Dr. Larissa Yocom (USU)
